Disney has been firing on all cylinders lately with the box office successes starting with Deadpool and Wolverine this past summer, Inside Out 2 from Pixar, and Moana 2 from Disney Animation owning the holiday box office. Throw in Agatha All Along to take make some Halloween numbers on Disney+ and you have a solid mix of Golden Globe nominees – and that’s exactly what happened. All of the aforementioned movies have been nominated for a Golden Globe, with Inside Out 2 being the most surprising of the bunch.
Inside Out 2 snags the nomination for Cinematic and Box Office Achievement, a new category for this year’s awards, and will be going up against Marvel’s Deadpool and Wolverine, Alien: Romulus, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, Gladiator II, Twisters, Wicked, and the Wild Robot. Last year was the first time the award show presented the award which went to the Barbie movie, so it’s kind of hard to tell what perimeters these movies are actually being judged on.
Either way, Inside Out 2 was a huge success even while sandwiched between the only Marvel release of the year and the a (surprise) holiday record breaker with Moana 2. If you really think about it, a lot of the success from Moana 2 very well could have been driven by the earlier initial success of Inside Out 2. The sequel followed the same cast of characters from the first hit movie, Inside Out, widely known as one of Pixar’s best movies to date. The story was about a girl going through her teenage years, so it fit perfect for the main demographic it was aiming for, and added (strong) new characters, new locations, and relevant new themes like dealing with anxiety and cell phone addition. Anyone from any demographic who watches this movie could find something beneficial to take away from it that someone relates to their own life.
Inside Out 2 stars Amy Poehler as Joy, Phyllis Smith as Sadness, Lewis Black as Anger, Tony Hale as Fear, Liza Lapira as Disgust, and new characters Maya Hawke as Anxiety, Paul Walter Houser as Embarrassment, and Adele Exarchopoulos as Ennui. You can watch Inside Out 2 on Disney+ right now, and on December 11th the spinoff miniseries Dream Productions will be airing on the streaming platform.
