Sony is releasing the next franchise in its live-action Spider-Man universe, Kraven the Hunter, on December 13th and while their movies haven’t always been fan favorites I am cautiously optimistic for this one. I enjoyed all of the Venom movies more than most, and I will openly admit I have never seen Morbius or Madame Web, but I had watched the Morbius post-credits scene online and decided that was all I really needed to see, and for some reason I have just never had any interest in watching Madame Web.
This next villain-centric franchise starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson as Kraven has a different vibe to it though, and I can’t help but think introducing this character might be a smart move down the line just in case Marvel ever decides to actually do a ‘Kraven’s Last Hunt’ movie… which they totally should, by the way. ‘Kraven’s Last Hunt’ is a popular Spider-Man storyline where Kraven hunts Spider-Man and buries him alive. I’m not saying do that, but the whole Kraven hunting Spidey thing would make a great movie.
According to Taylor-Johnson, it sounds like he might want that to eventually happen as well. While talking to ScreenRant, the actor cites ‘Kraven’s Last Hunt’ as inspiration for his take on the character: “One of my favorite stories is ‘Kraven’s Last Hunt’. It was one of the source materials I used to go back from. He’s got some dark demons there and we are basically showing the birth of that and how he becomes a villain that we then come to know.”
He goes on to hint that he would eventually like to see his character come back, and we can all but assume he means to fight Spider-Man, “I think it could be an audience’s sort of villain favorite, definitely go toe-to-toe with some other people down the line, man.”
There are a ton of stories that Marvel can adapt into a good movie, but if Kraven is even half way decent this could be a great route to take for a Spider-Man movie. Either way, the trailers have all made this movie at least look like a fun time, more similar to the Venom movies and less similar to Morbius and Madame Web. And that’s not a criticism.
