Dave Filoni Confirms ‘The Mandalorian & Grogu’ Movie Has Wrapped Filming

With the success of Skeleton Crew, it looks like the Star Wars franchise has began righting the ship that went off course a long time ago but has not yet been properly realigned. The Mandalorian on Disney+ is one of best all around received projects Lucasfilms has ever done and almost put the franchise in a position to thrive again. But… then it didn’t. Star Wars fans still like Star Wars, but they’re getting older and more bored with the current offerings. Not to mention the younger generation has nothing that can pull them into the franchise. This is why ideas like The Mandalorian and Skeleton Crew work so well, you don’t need to memorize multiple textbooks just to know what the heck is going on.

It looks like the creative team at Lucasfilms, led by Chief Creative Officer Dave Filoni, shares this general sentiment because they decided to capitalize on the success of The Mandalorian and, well, make it a movie. Grogu, also known as Baby Yoda, has to be the biggest thing Star Wars has done to pop culture since the original trilogy (yeah, seriously) so it just makes sense this this concept would both sell movie tickets, and help reestablish footing for the franchise in theaters after the last trilogy. The movie is slated to premier in 2026 and Dave Filoni has officially confirmed that the filming portion has wrapped on the project.

While at the premier of Skeleton Crew, Extra TV asked the CCO what he could tell them about the film, to which he understandably said, “nothing”, but then went on to talk more about the process and the evolution of the project and the character of Grogu:

Lucasfilms Chief Creative Officer Dave Filoni at the ‘Skeleton Crew’ premier

“Nothing. Nothing, of course. I’m very excited about it as well. Jon [Favreau] and I had a great time working on that as we always do. It was great seeing Grogu. He’s become such a star. It’s amazing how it’s evolved, what we can do now with the puppetry compared to season one…”

Filoni says that the film has wrapped and that he loved Grogu and the advancement of the puppetry involved, but when it comes to movie details they are (wisely) playing those cards very close to the chest. The show has three seasons under its belt, which saw the evolution of both Grogu and his skills using the force, along with Mando’s effectiveness as a father figure to the baby Jedi in training. The show always did well presenting these themes and it will be interesting to see how they translate to a feature length film.

The Mandalorian & Grogu is slated for a 2026 release, not much else is known at this time, but we will bring you any details as we get them!
