Along with the news that Moana 2 and Inside Out 2 are both being nominated for Golden Globes, Marvel also has some contenders with Deadpool and Wolverine and Agatha All Along. Deadpool and Wolverine was the only movie released by Marvel in 2024, bringing in $1.3 billion in revenue, and Agatha All Along was a critically successful Disney+ entry that served as a follow up to the also successful series Wandavision. Not bad for a studio commonly seen as being in a restructuring phase. Maybe Deadpool really is Marvel Jesus after all? We will have to wait until Captain America Brave New World, THUNDERBOLTS*, Daredevil Born Again, and Fantastic Four First Steps to know for sure, but I’m optimistic.
Agatha All Along stars Kathryn Hahn as Agatha Harkness, the antagonistic witch from Wandavision, and MCU newcomer Joe Locke as Wanda’s teenage son Billy Maximoff, more commonly known as the mutant Wiccan. It shows the story of a group of witches attempting to travel down the witches road and is one of the more horror-centric projects the MCU has done, reminiscent of the tone from Sam Raimi’s Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness. The show wasn’t a major tentpole event for the MCU but was an entertaining enough installment for the pocket of the universe that it calls home. Agatha All Along has been nominated for the Best Performance for an Actress in a television series, musical, or comedy for Kathryn Hahn’s portrayal as Agatha.
For films, Deadpool and Wolverine was obviously going to be the Marvel entry considering it was the only film entry this year. The movie did fantastic both critically and financially, and helped stabilize the flailing MCU. As a result it has been nominated for the Cinematic and Box Office Achievement Award. While all the other movies were trying to figure out if they wanted to be part of the mutant saga, the multiverse saga, or the Eternals celestial saga, Deadpool and Wolverine was just fun, and that is exactly what Marvel needs again. Iron Man became huge because it was fun. Avengers became huge because it was fun. The first Guardians of the Galaxy became huge because it was fun. This movie successfully used that formula. It didn’t change anything massive for the MCU, while introducing solid characters and giving us a truly good, entertaining story. It also gave Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine his yellow suit and I mean, come on. If that isn’t enough to get a Marvel fan to buy a movie ticket I’m not sure anything is. MCU movies typically are either good, or they advance the main saga. It’s rare that a film does both. This film was able to balance both while acting as a palate cleanser at the same time. It’s too early to say where Deadpool will pop up next in the MCU, but after this movie you can bet we will see the merc with a mouth again.
Did you watch both Agatha All Along and Deadpool and Wolverine, and do you think that they’re award worthy? The Golden Globes air January 5th, so we have less than a month to find out!
