Rumors about director Jordan Peele taking on an MCU film are not new as he had reportedly been in the running at one point to direct the X-Men reboot for the studio, which ultimately went to Thunderbolts* director Jake Schreier. Now, his hat is back in the ring for a future Marvel entry as “scooper” Daniel Richtman (@DanielRPK) has reported that the director is still in talks with the studio to helm a future film.
Known for his sketch comedy and horror movie prowess, Peele is best known for his time on the comedy show Key and Peele and his horror films Get Out (2017), Us (2019), and Nope (2022) which were all well received for their mix of psychological horror and notes of dark humor. X-Men may have not been the best movie for the director with the films on his resume (not to say it wouldn’t have been good), but something more along the lines of Blade, Midnight Sons, or even a third Doctor Strange installment would probably be much more in his wheelhouse.

As of right now, nothing official has been stated about which films he is in contention to direct. Considering the Blade film with Mahershala Ali has been all but shelved at this point, my money goes to Peele eventually directing a Midnight Sons film. Midnight Sons is a team up of dark and paranormal Marvel entities such as Ghost Rider, Doctor Strange, Moon Knight, and Blade. The ensemble would give the director enough range to have fun developing each character (or adapting current characters who have still not fully hit their stride yet in the MCU, like Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange or Oscar Isaac’s Moon Knight) to fit his mold. We’re already assuming that production of the Blade film has been absorbed into the Midnight Sons film, so with that idea in mind Peele would ultimately be inventing the character for the studio while also being to develop other major characters at the same time. This actually seems like a better option for the director then a stand alone Blade film if you ask me. Keep in mind this is all speculation, but since Blade had been delayed and pushed back so many times at this point it just makes more sense to go this route.
Marvel is known for letting up and coming (or in some cases established directors, such as Sam Raimi), take on classic comic franchises to put their own personal spin on the comic-book narrative. James Gunn did it with Guardians of the Galaxy, legendary horror director Sam Raimi came aboard for Doctor Strange and the Multiverse or Madness, and even the Russo Brothers themselves broke into the MCU doing the same thing with Captain America: The Winter Soldier. In recent years we’ve had other directors like Jake Schreier (Thunderbolts*), Destin Daniel Cretton (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings), and Shaun Levy (Deadpool and Wolverine) leave their mark on the MCU by continuing the tradition. Bringing Peele into the mix would add another major directorial name to the list, and one that already has a modern and established style that quite honestly would be very fitting for a property like the Midnight Sons.
As of right now, we don’t have much more information on what the studio is planning after Doomsday aside from reviving the X-Men, but we think that will change leading up to the massive film in December of next year. Giving away too many future plans after Doomsday is not the best idea anyway as it could lead to spoilers for what Marvel is hoping to be a film that tops even Endgame, so keeping everything under wraps for now makes sense. We will make sure to report more on this as it comes out, as I personally think this would be a very smart move for Marvel. Peele already has massive respect on his name, and it would give the MCU a nice little shot of adrenaline to keep it going strong after Doomsday and Secret Wars.
