The Thunderbolts* was Marvel’s answer to DC’s Suicide Squad, a team of villains and anti-heroes that are forced together to become an unlikely group of heroes. By the end of the film, the team is officially known as the New Avengers in a marketing ploy put into motion by Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, and if early rumors are true then they will most likely have a decent sized part to play in the upcoming Avengers Doomsday. But what will happen to the team after the next couple Avengers films?
The Thunderbolts* fared decently well in the box office, making a significant profit compared to its minimal $180 million production cost so most Marvel fans are not ruling out the idea of a sequel somewhere down the line after the Doom saga dust has settled. But how exactly will the sequel pick up where the first film left off? According to a new rumor from the Cosmic Circus’ Alex Perez, we can most likely expect to see more Thunderbolts* down the line, but the line up might contain some new faces.
According to the scooper, Perez confidently answered questions in a Q&A about the possibility of a sequel and mentioned that while we could see a second film featuring the team of unlikely allies, there may be some new or different members. Check out the sequence of questions below:
leviathan: I absolutely adored Thunderbolts and that core cast of characters, and with the director working on X-Men, it certainly seems Marvel likes how it was received. So I would like to ask whether they’re planning to continue the Thunderbolts story in a dedicated sequel or through other people’s projects.
Alex Perez: You could say that. Although I’m not sure it will be the same team.
∀: As always, guys, thank you very much, and I hope everything is going well for you! I rewatched Thunderbolts yesterday, so a related question is mandatory: something exciting in the way involving the new Avengers as a team besides Bob/Sentry? My second question is derivative because I’m curious about Ava and/or Walker’s roles in the next Avengers movies.
Alex Perez: In Doomsday and Avengers, not really much outside of Yelena, Bob, and Alexei. Their future, though, is very interesting. Because Valentina is one sneaky b****. And she really just loves to collect super-powered people and mercenaries and then pit them against each other. I mean, idk about you, but I’d love to see Bullseye taking shots at Bucky. Or Red Guardian and Bob sizing up Abomination. And imagine if Ghost ended up seeing a “ghost of her past,” but it’s not really her; it’s just someone else. That’s be wicked, wouldn’t you think?
The second question contains a couple pretty big points that are just quickly grazed over within the casual answer. Perez makes the point that Fontaine likes to ‘collect super-powered people’, and then specifically mentions a name that has already come up a couple times over the past few months in relation to the potential of joining the Thunderbolts*: Benjamin Poindexter, better known as the Daredevil villain Bullseye. The character already showed his anti-hero chops on the latest season of Daredevil: Born Again by (reluctantly) aiding Matt Murdock in his fight against Kingpin, lightly setting him up for what could be a major antihero role in Marvel films to come. Perez also mentions the Abomination, but talks about the Hulk villain in more of an antagonist role rather than an antihero. And to be fair, watching Bullseye and Bucky take shots at each other would make for some entertaining action.
For now, the only rumblings we’ve heard about the Daredevil characters joining the theatrical Avengers outings has not gone past the possibility of Matt Murdock’s inclusion in Secret Wars, so I wouldn’t expect to see anything like this happen until the Doom saga has finally come to an end. The third season of Born Again has already been confirmed so there is a good chance we will at least see the character again on Disney+, but with Poindexter arguably being one of the highlights of the second season of Born Again I wouldn’t be surprised to see Marvel add the character to the Thunderbolts* (or New Avengers, or Dark Avengers, or whoever they will be at that point). Bullseye even has a stint as a member of the team in the comics, briefly joining them during the Civil War story-line (among others). The actor, Wilson Bethel, has also specifically mentioned that he wants his character to join the team over the last couple months in interviews. For now (and the foreseeable future) this is all just speculation, but to be honest it kind of just makes sense.
