  • New ‘Lanterns’ Teaser Released, Features Familiar Cameo From James Gunn’s ‘Superman’

As DC fans begin to gear up for the next installment in James Gunn’s comic inspired universe, HBO Max has released a second official teaser for the show – featuring a new look at the type of lantern powers we can expect in the show as well as a cameo from a character introduced in 2025’s Superman.

The first official teaser for the show premiered about two months ago and gives fans a better look at the teacher and student relationship of the two main characters Hal Jordan and John Stewart (played by Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre, respectively). The first teaser also gave us a good idea of the vibe and the tone of the show, featuring a grittier undertone than Gunn’s Superman that matches the likes of True Detective and Watchmen and distinguishes itself from the 2011 iteration of the character played by Ryan Reynolds in the Green Lantern movie.

The new teaser features a quick cameo from the first Green Lantern we all got to meet in this universe, Guy Gardner, played by Nathan Fillion in the Superman film, complete with bowl haircut and all. We also get to see the characters use their Green Lantern powers a lot more, giving us an idea of what to expect in terms of CGI and comic inspired accuracy. Check out the teaser below:

The new teaser starts almost immediately with Hal Jordan using his powers in a massive way to create a giant green dome that looks to be protecting a town from a space attack. This trailer did a lot to show fans that even though this show seems much more grounded than the 2011 Reynolds’ version, it still isn’t afraid to showcase its galactic roots. Although we don’t see any sort of aliens in this trailer, it lays the groundwork to allow for that type of spectacle which will inevitably have to be part of a show featuring the galactic Green Lanterns.

We then see Hal use his powers to create money for a jukebox, followed directly by the hero then using his powers to create a green bubble around himself to protect from gunfire. This trailer really does a ton to put the worries of fans at ease that weren’t sure this show would do the character’s comic origins justice as it masterfully blends the gritty with the galactic. We then even get to see Hal launch off and fly, reminiscent of Gunn’s Superman. There is also a quick scene of Hal suited up, and we get to see (at least the top half) of how the character will look in his costume – and honestly it looks great and fits the tone of then show perfectly.

At about the 1:10 mark of the teaser, we then get the cameo from Nathan Fillion’s Guy Gardner – the first Green Lantern that we met in the Superman film, officially connecting the properties within the same established universe. The character looks the same, but is behind bars and has a noticeably more gritty tone to him as well, even though he still has that same goofy Guy Gardner bowl cut. The cameo is only for a second, but works to help establish the larger narrative of the evolving DC Universe. The rest of the teaser is a showcase of war action and the back and forth of Jordan and Stewart, the two leads of the show, ending with John Stewart also wielding the ring the way Jordan did earlier in the teaser, giving fans an idea of what to expect in terms of where his character will eventually end up.

Although we haven’t seen a ton of footage from the new series, this teaser did a lot to help establish the feel of the gritty – meets – galactic tone of the show and helps put the mind at ease about how this new DCU will be showcasing the Green Lantern corps. Fans were originally worried it would be too grounded to truly do the characters justice, but I think this new footage should give fans a ton of hope about where this show is going to be going and showcases what should be a excellent new addition to the growing universe.

Are you exited for Lanters? Only a few months to go, with the show’s premier coming out on HBO Max on August 16th. Are you excited for this new series? Make sure to let us know your thoughts in the comments or on our Instagram!
