Tom Holland Describes ‘Spider-Man Brand New Day’: “Feels Like a Detective Movie”

Robert Pattinson watch out, Batman won’t be the only superhero detective coming to the big screen in the next two years: according to Spider-Man Brand New Day star Tom Holland, Spider-Man’s next outing will also contain “extra layers” and an “intricate villain plotline”, making it feel “like a detective movie”.

Even though Brand New Day is coming out in a month and a half, the film has done something that pretty much no other Marvel film has been able to do successfully: keep the main villain completely under wraps. We know the movie will be jam packed with villains with antagonists like Tombstone, Scorpion, The Hand, and potentially The Punisher, Savage Hulk, and Sadie Sink’s presumed Jean Grey all having potential to make Spider-Man’s day a little tougher. And from what we can tell, all of that was done to maintain a layer of secrecy around the film in a franchise that has historically been rife with spoilers. And according to Tom Holland in a new interview with Esquire, that is exactly what the film’s creators were going for.

Esquire did a large scale interview with the actor that goes into everything from the beginning of Spider-Man’s days back with Marvel all the way to Holland’s more modern non-Spidey films, and of course a couple blurbs about the upcoming Brand New Day. Not too much was given away, but the actor did confirm what all fans thought going into the month of the movie’s debut: this movie is specifically leading fans all over the place with the information the studio chooses to release in an effort to maintain secrecy. According to Holland, “The movie is already the best Spider-Man movie that we’ve ever made,” and that the month’s leading up to the release are all about adding “extra layers”.

The actor then continued to vaguely describe the genre of this upcoming Spider-Man installment: “This movie is a real mystery and for a large portion of the film, even Spider-Man is a little bit at odds and lost and is like, ‘What is going on?’ We’re just trying to find ways to make this movie feel like a detective movie.” So although Holland did not say that the film’s entire genre could be considered a detective movie, he did say that the final product does feel like that a little bit. So, it’s not just fans that have no idea what to really expect from the plot itself or where the film might go, but it looks as if Spider-Man himself will also have those same questions throughout the film.

The presumed plot threads all point to a story that involves Jean Grey as a fugitive from the Department of Damage Control, and Frank Castle’s Punisher being in the role of protector for the mutant. None of that can be confirmed, but @DanielRPK did just recently post that he can confirm Sadie Sink is 100% playing Jean Grey, seemingly confirming fan suspicion.

However, it seems like that will all be a subplot that will be only one layer of a film that aside from the information given above, nobody else knows very much about. Historically, Tom Holland has not been very good at keeping Marvel secrets, so it’s definitely a different vibe going into this Spider-Man film without really knowing any of the major details. Even the Sadie Sink plotline is complete fan speculation at this point, and to be honest I prefer it this way. It’s been quite a long time since I’ve gone into a movie theater to watch a Spider-Man film without having a fairly good idea of where the movie is going to take us. This time, I can confidently say that I most of this movie will come as a mystery to me when I go into the theater to see it for the first time and I think that’s a very refreshing feeling for Marvel fans used to the same modern routine of knowing how a film will play out months in advance. Even the trailer has an aura of mystery, and gives off the feeling that Peter Parker himself really has no idea what is actually going on. As much as I am anticipating what this movie might be giving us, I am thankful Marvel is going this route for the marketing and plot because it makes the movie going experience that much better.

Tickets for Brand New Day should be going on sale tomorrow according to a few sources, and I will be purchasing my ticket ASAP for the film dropping at the end of July on the 31st.
