  • ‘Batman II’ Star Sebastian Stan Confirms Harvey Dent Will Become Disfigured Villain Two-Face

Two-Face is one of those iconic Batman villains in the vein of the Joker or the Penguin that no matter how many times the character has been explored, a new version will pretty much always be welcome. Harvey Dent was last on the big screen in 2008’s The Dark Knight, played by actor Aaron Eckhart, alongside Heath Ledger’s Joker. The character will be back on the big screen again for Matt Reeves’ The Batman II, coming to theaters in 2027, played by Marvel’s own Sebastian Stan.

It’s been quite a while since we’ve last seen Robert Pattinson suit up as Batman, but since late last year fans finally started to receive news about the direction the film will be going with major casting teases such as Scarlett Johansson and Sebastian Stan. Since then, both actors have been confirmed by the studio, and while Johansson’s character is still a mystery it has been confirmed that Stan will be playing the infamous District Attorney turned supervillain, Harvey Dent.

The media outlet Deadline caught up with the Two-Face actor at this year’s Cannes Film Festival where his film Fjord won the distinctive Palme d’Or – a film exploring religious intolerance and violence towards children, according to the website. Deadline spoke to Stan about the award winning film, but didn’t miss the chance to also speak with the actor about The Batman II. And while not much was said, Stan did confirm that he will be, “playing many roles in this one” and that he will be in London over the summer to film.

Sebastian Stan will be playing Harvey Dent aka Two-Face, one of the lead roles in Matt Reeves’ Batman II and confirms he will be filming over the summer.

In addition to confirmation of when he will be filming, Stan also spoke to Deadline about he transformation into Two-Face and how the hair and makeup team have come about making the look of the disfigured half of his face work. According to the actor, “I’m excited, I’m nervous and trying to keep surprising myself“. This is also a somewhat major confirmation that his character will in fact become the disfigured villain and not just remain as the fully-faced District Attorney throughout the entirety of the movie. For comparison, Harvey Dent was also in 1989’s Batman starring Michael Keaton but never actually became the super villain until 1995’s Batman Forever where the original actor, Billy Dee Williams, was replaced with Tommy Lee Jones and essentially forgotten about for the new version. In this instance, Stan confirms he will be going the route of Aaron Eckhart and will become the fully fledged super-villain by the end of his first foray as the character.

In Batman lore, Dent was disfigured when crime boss Sal Maroni threw acid in his face while in court. This story detail was used during the 1995 version but was changed entirely in The Dark Knight, retconning the villains origin to an explosion set off by Heath Ledgers Joker after kidnapping the District Attorney to use as bait to draw out Christian Bale’s Batman, essentially making Batman’s main big bad responsible for Two-Faces origin in that version. In The Batman II, it’s being heavily rumored that the film will take major inspiration from The Long Halloween graphic novel and remain much more accurate to the comic origins even though The Dark Knight also took moderate inspiration from the same story-arc.

Sebastian Stan already has plenty of superhero experience playing the Winter Soldier opposite Chris Evans’ Captain America in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

While the actor didn’t reveal anything major when it comes to news regarding the Batman II, anything is welcome at this point because of how long fans have gone without any real updates over the last few years. And while it’s exciting to hear Stan talk about his role, it’s probably for the best the actor comes from the Marvel Cinematic Universe and knows how to compose himself when it comes to news outlets prying for production information. I would assume over the coming months we start to hear more about filming as production is already currently underway and will continue for the majority of this year.
