James Gunn has a history of answering fan question on social media, usually with cryptic or vague answers that leave fans satisfied while also maintaining an aura of mystery, and in his last response to curious followers he may have just revealed something major with regards to two new characters – or maybe not?
Yesterday, a follower of Gunn’s asked if we would see a list of A-C list characters show up in the DCU and his response was predictably vague but also telling at the same time. The fan asked if we would see General Zod, Doomsday (the DC character), Dr. Fate, Black Adam, Ultra Man, or Darkseid, and which Gunn confirmed two of them will be included in the DCU in the not so distant future. Check out the blurb below:

Gunn does not confirm which two characters he’s referring to, but most fans agree one of the spots already belongs to Darkseid as he has been confirmed to be the main antagonist in the upcoming Mr. Miracle animated series. Keep in mind this is going to be an animated adaption of the character, but as we’ve seen with other properties in the new DCU that doesn’t necessarily mean we won’t see the same Darkseid cross over into live action as their animated and live action franchises seem to be one cohesive universe with no real question being raised.
This leaves one more potentially major character to appear in the DCU – but which was Gunn talking about? We already had a few run ins with General Zod during the Snyder era so we might need a little more time before bringing that infamous villain back. Dr. Fate would be a welcome appearance of Pierece Brosnan as the character was one of the best aspects of the Black Adam movie, I would even hope they keep the casting the same because he was done very well for his first live action appearance. Black Adam might be a longshot because I think the world needs time to cool after the build up and general all around let down that the last Black Adam movie was. I personally didn’t hate the movie, but it did not end up being the masterpiece I think the studio was hoping it would be. Doomsday is referring to the DC character, not the Marvel event – for anyone out there not 100% clear on that for whatever reason, and the character was already done (somewhat) recently in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Ultra Man was already in the first Superman movie and I don’t feel like his character was established nearly well enough to warrant an impactful return, even with the Crime Syndicate. Save that kind of thing for villains that actually made an impact on audiences, at least in my opinion.
So out of all the characters listed, I think Gunn was most likely referring to Darkseid and I’m hoping for Dr. Fate in some capacity. Dr. Fate is an interesting character that I could see popping up in many different franchises, and his powers done to contrast Doctor Strange in the MCU would be a welcome addition to a universe that so far seems to be embracing it’s intergalactic roots much more than it’s paranormal and magic based, which honestly makes sense for now. For now, all we can really do is theorize! Who do you think Gunn was talking about? Let us know your thoughts down below in the comments or on our Instagram!
