  • Next Marvel Saga Rumored to Include Large Scale Street Level Team Up Film

A new rumor circulating the internet is claiming that the Defenders might just get their theatrical debut in a large scale street level team up featuring the heroes coming together once again to take down the Kingpin once and for all. Oh, and Spider-Man might be there too.

Fans were shocked when Vincent D’Onofrio’s Wilson Fisk aka Kingpin was brought back into the main MCU timeline as most originally believed the one time Netflix exclusive character was a couple notches too violent for mainline Marvel. That, however, did not stop the evolving film studio from making him the villain of the Hawkeye series, a main character in the Echo series, and then even have him reprise his role as the big bad once again for the Daredevil revival series, Born Again. Kingpin was first shown as Matt Murdock’s nemesis in Netflix’s Daredevil from over a decade ago at this point (wtf?), so the fact they went that far out of their way to bring him back shows how much faith Marvel has in the popularity of the villain.

Not only has Marvel proven that Kingpin is a worthy adversary to focus on, but Daredevil Born Again season two will also include Jessica Jones, the Punisher and Claire Temple will be back in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, and other Netflix characters like Luke Cage and Iron First are also rumored for Born Again season 2 cameos. All of these characters are massively popular Marvel heroes, and the film studio is now allegedly planning on having them all come together again as a conclusion to the current Devil’s Reign storyline taking place across some of their current shows and movies.

Devil’s Reign includes Daredevil Born Again and was technically started all the way back with Hawkeye with the reintroduction of the Kingpin, and if the new rumor is accurate will come to the forefront after Avengers Doomsday and Secret Wars concludes the current saga taking place. The premise of Spider-Man: Brand New Day also lends itself to the Devil’s Reign storyline, and might act as a segue to introducing the current Defenders to the other street-level Marvel character that also calls Kingpin one of his greatest adversaries, Peter Parker.

Will the full Defenders team ever get their time to shine in theaters?

According to scooper Alex Perez, these are the rumored plans for this group of street-level heroes going into the next saga. According to Perez in his latest Q&A:

Q: Hello Alex, will the Devil’s Reign storyline conclusion be under a Spider-Man movie title or a crossover team-up event?

A: This is an excellently timed question because I get to tell you about a recent rumor that has me excited for the next saga. I have heard the idea thrown around for the upcoming saga to feature a crossover team-up film that would serve as the epilogue of the Devil’s Reign storyline that technically started all the way back in Hawkeye with the appearance of Wilson Fisk.

The idea would be to feature street-level heroes from NYC affected by Fisk’s reign of terror against vigilantes, and we would see the likes of Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, Punisher, and more team up to take down Wilson Fisk and his enforcers in a final bout against the regime. And that said, film is the current path for Spider-Man to be able to appear alongside these heroes. This is apparently one of the plans they have in motion to try and get these heroes to appear together.

The question mentions the possibility that this team-up could occur in a future Spider-Man film, and while Perez side-steps that possibility he does mention that the characters presumed to be in a Spider-Man film of that nature might actually end up in their own film. Whether or not it’ll be a Defenders film, or have a different independent title, is still unknown, but it is implied that it will feature the Defenders characters in an effort to maintain vigilantism in a city where Fisk was last shown to be beginning a full-scale war against the idea. Fisk is a class-A villain for both Daredevil and Spider-Man, and the two characters have already met in Spider-Man: No Way Home, so it makes complete sense that Marvel fans will see these two characters working together again against the villain.

Matt Murdock, played by Charlie Cox, has already met Peter Parker in Spider-Man: No Way Home so it only makes sense the two will eventually team up

As it stands right now, Marvel has all the pieces they need to continue building on the foundation set with shows like Hawkeye and Daredevil Born Again. It has not been confirmed which other characters will be coming to Born Again season 2 along with Jessica Jones, but chances are we will see more characters from the Netflix series pop in if recent online rumors contain any truth to them. Although names like Luke Cage and Iron Fist have not been confirmed for any projects just yet, both characters have been the subject of many recent rumors and if history tells us anything that means there are some gestating plans somewhere for the heroes.

Just imagine how cool it would be to see a live action Defenders and Spider-Man team up to take down Kingpin once and for all. I’m personally getting chills just thinking about it. For now, everything here is still compete speculation but all the pieces are in place for something like this to actually happen. And with the rumors of the Midnight Sons movie coming out in the next phase as well, it looks like Marvel already knows which teams it will be focusing on alongside the Avengers in the post-Doomsday and Secret Wars era (sorry Guardians of the Galaxy, but it looks like you’ve been all but replaced…?). For now, teams like the Fantastic Four and the X-Men will be the focus, but once Marvel has these major players firmly established they will have time to go back and focus on other teams that fans are itching to see in films still. It truly gives me hope that Marvel’s best days are still ahead of them.
