  • ‘Spider-Punk’ Animated Series First Draft in “Finishing Stages”

First poster for ‘Spider-Man Noir’, coming to Amazon Prime Video and MGM+ in 2026.

It looks like the Into the Spider-Verse franchise from Sony didn’t just give Miles Morales a much larger place in the hearts of Spider-Man fans, but both Spider-Man Noir and now Spider-Punk are both going to be getting their accolades as well.

As most fans are aware, Nicolas Cage will be reprising his role as Spider-Man Noir in a new animated series airing on both MGM+ and Amazon Prime Video. The character first appeared in Into the Spider-Verse with the alias Ben Reilly, and was one of the Spider-Men sucked form their universe and dropped into Miles Morales’ to help take down the Kingpin. The new series will be available in both black and white and color as an homage to the original character from the comics that debuted in the Marvel Noir series, placing him as a masked detective-style vigilante sometime around the time of the Great Depression.

Spider-Man Noir isn’t the only Spidey-variant from Into the Spider-Verse getting his own series, as Spider-Punk (first introduced in the sequel Across the Spider-Verse) is also going to be getting his owns series which is currently in early pre-production stages. According to the character’s intro from the film:

A’ight, my name’s Hobie, Hobie Brown. I was bitten by a– Wouldn’t you like to know? You know what I mean? And for the last three years, I’ve been the one and only– Wait, wait. Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait. You think I’m going to show you my secret identity? Come out of it. That is, when I’m not playing shows, antagonizing fascists, staging unpermitted political actions-slash-performing art pieces or having a laugh at the pub with the mandem. I’m not a role model. I was briefly a runway model. I hate the AM. I hate the PM. I hate labels. I’m not a hero because calling yourself a hero makes you a self-mythologizing narcissistic autocrat. Come on!

The character was given the name Spider-Punk due to his rebellious attitude and nature, and fights against the corrupt government that has formed on his own Earth-138. Not much about the animated series is known yet, but the first draft for the series is nearing completion and the creators are currently, “in [their] process”, according to an article from Deadline.

In an interview with actor Daniel Kaluuya, who played the voice of Hobie Brown/Spider-Punk, and will reprising the role for the animated series, it was confirmed that the show is still in creative stages but the first draft is in “finishing stages”. The news outlet also asked Kaluuya if the show would be a stand-alone featuring the character, or will include crossovers with other characters from the Spider-Verse franchise, to which he simply replied: “TBD”. As for now, answers to those questions are still anybodies guess.

The new series is being brought to life by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller of the original Spider-Verse movies and the Lego Movie franchise, whom Kaluuya gave praise to by calling them, “great collaborators and storytellers”:

“I was so inspired by them. I think the filmmakers and the animators are some of the best storytellers in the game. So, I want to put myself in environments where I can grow and learn what they know.”

Kaluuya concludes by passing on advice that Phil Lord had given him on storytelling: “films aren’t about people, they’re about relationships”. It will be interesting to see how that philosophy plays out in the news series as it points to the inclusion of strong supporting characters that will help elevate the series right along with the title character. Are you excited for the Spider-Man Noir and Spider-Punk series? What other Spider-Verse characters do you want to see get their own series? I personally would love to see John Mulaney’s Spider-Ham included somewhere in these shows, but maybe that’s just me. Let us know your thoughts down in the comments!
